WOW Wednesday – ORS & MMS Students

On Wednesdays, I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Every day our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.

In the wake of our Elementary Esports Divisional event, I wanted to make sure we had a dedicated space to highlight and celebrate our student volunteers who helped make that day such a success. During the initial planning of the event, I wanted to showcase student voices and talent as much as possible while working to reduce adult leadership positions. As the event was communicated to participating elementary schools I simultaneously connected with our middle and high schools seeking volunteers. These positions, while open to everyone, was focused on recruitment from our MSEA teams. This volunteer focus was not only related to the fact that these students were most familiar with the field of esports, but could also mentor students on the esports opportunities available to them as they progressed through the division.

In the end, we were able to compile a robust volunteer team that was organized as follows:

  • technical support/refs
    • 4 students from grades 6-8
    • assisted students and coaches with the navigation and features of Minecraft
    • modeled and supported teams in their adherence to the MSEA Community Guidelines
  • judging panel
    • 2 students from grade 8
    • critiqued student builds in relation to the build challenge parameters and event rubric
    • modeled and supported teams in their adherence to the MSEA Community Guidelines
  • event emcee
    • 2 students from grade 8
    • delivered event welcome ceremony
    • communicated event reminders and announcements throughout the day
    • announced event winners
    • delivered closing ceremony

The students involved as volunteers were extremely attentive to their individual roles and did absolutely amazing. Without their support, this event would not have been the same and I am incredibly thankful for their assistance.

I'd love to hear your thoughts; please leave a comment!
