Online with Intention – #ISTEsla20 Wk 1 Day 1

The following post has been completed as part of my personal reflection as I work through the ISTE Summer Learning Academy #ISTEsla20 Any images, tables, or direct quotes (as indicated with the appropriate formatting) are provided from the specific course or webinar and can be credited to: ISTE Summer Learning Academy. Today kicks off the ISTE Summer Learning Academy and I’m looking forward to learning more about online instruction; specifically a focus on pedagogy, content delivery, assessment, and relationships in the online space. I am lucky to have 3 MVSD colleagues (and 15K other educators) also participating in these sessions and it is my hope to share with them via our MVSD ICT PLC Team through this PD so we can craft how this information can fit within our local context. One of my tips for ensuring the success of online PD is to take notes as you go. I find this essential as I make sense of new information, connect it to existing knowledge, and plan for integration into my learning scenario. As such, I will be using this blog to document my thoughts, share helpful information, and ask questions.

Week 1 – Day 1 starts off with a webinar titled, “Online with Intention – Distance Learning Guided by Access to Action, Creative Expression, & Shared Experiences“. It is facilitated by Jennifer Williams and Billy Spicer and is described as,

Explore online learning programs and practices centered on innovative pedagogies, meaningful uses of technology and equitable access to taking action on ideas. We’ll provide examples of and examine ways to effectively incorporate collaborative projects in distance and blended classrooms, and we’ll dive into topics of inquiry and global collaboration. Participants will leave with flexible, ready-to-go action plans for multiple futures and with questions to consider in preparing for new shifts in education aimed at providing high-quality education for all.

Main Takeaways

  • Access: build awareness of resources and strategies to narrow the digital equity divide.
    • The 5 Whys: start with a standard assessment question and use the student response to frame a “why” question to gather more information from them. Repeat 5 times.
    • Card Sorts: fold a blank piece of paper in quadrants labeled speaking, listening, reading, writing to get students to organize their thoughts.
  • Learning Design: design learning that empowers learners and fosters student agency.
    • Goals come first and then find a tool that meets student needs/abilities/access.
  • Collaboration: build classroom community that fosters collaboration and creativity.
    • Purposefully build in activities to connect to oneself, locally, globally.
  • “Go slow to go fast”. PBL, Genius Hour, student choice & cross-curricular projects cover a lot more outcomes than focusing on individual outcomes in isolation.
  • The session focused on the framework of Human-Centered Design which is rooted on empathy and optimism. It moved through these three phases as follows:
    • Inspiration – Access to Action: traditional education focuses a lot of implementation (final assessment) but this focuses on more time on the inspiration phase (inquiry). Shift from consuming to creation; now to move even further and take action for social change.
    • Ideation – Creative Expression: being online isn’t about “cool apps” it is about best practices and gifting students an opportunity to learn and share what they learned. Give time for “sandboxing”; time for students to play/learn/mess around (no bad ideas).
    • Implementation – Shared Experience: making a case for playfulness and joy. Inquiry projects. This isn’t an “add on” it is a way to address the curriculum you are focused on.

Questions

General PD Thoughts

  • I really appreciate that #ISTEsla20 not only shares great content but it appropriately models online instruction and introduces participants to a variety of tech tools to use! Today’s webinar shared MentiMeter, Wakelet, Anchor, Empatico, Rock Your World, Adobe Spark.
  • I’m thankful for an opportunity to use the BrightSpace platform in the “learner” view as this is what MB Ed is now using as a replacement to Blackboard.
  • Thank you to Jennifer and Billy for sharing for Week 1 – Day 1!
