#TechTipTuesday – Immersive Reader in Edge

Every Tuesday I share a Tech Tip on our social media pages to assist our staff in their use of technology as it relates to their role.

For those that are new to Immersive Reader, this Microsoft assistive tool is compatible with many aspects of your Office 365 suite such as Word, OneNote, Teams, Outlook, and the Microsoft Edge Web Browser.  A video introduction hosted via YouTube is shared below:

This tool allows users to have any text read aloud to them while changing the style of reading voice and speed, as well as opening up the text in a separate window where they can change the font, font size, line spacing, background colour, and more.  It also includes translation features, dictionary entries for text words, and parts of speech labelling.

If you have ever assigned online research to your students you are probably familiar with some of these concerns:

  • websites are often “busy” with ads, navigation tables, pop-ups, embedded content, etc which can distract readers from the actual content they are trying to focus on
  • some websites are formatted in a way that is not user-friendly: small text, hard-to-read fonts, spacing irregularities, etc
  • website content may not be written at a reading level suited to the user and may be void of translation options

Through the integration of Immersive Reader within the Edge browser, these concerns are reduced! Check out a video tutorial below via Mike Tholfsen’s TikTok channel:
