Collaborative Video Projects

Collaborative Video Projects

On Thursdays I usually participate in the online social media trend of #ThrowbackThursday where you re-post a picture or video memory. These posts can be anything the user wants: good memories, bad memories, recent history or decades-old memories. Today, as I was scrolling through old posts on the blog and was reminded that 9 years ago this week I was working with Mike Nantais (who was teaching at BU) and Tyler Letkeman (fellow B.Ed student at the time) on our contribution to the #ETMOOC Lipdub.

This project saw participants from around the world work collaboratively to divide up a song, film various components, share their files, and create a final product.

You can check out the finished project below!

This project was a lot of fun and has since served as inspiration in several other projects that I have been a part of. These types of projects are a fun and accessible way to practice elements related to:

  • digital footprint and identity / social media use
  • collaborative document use (ex: Office 365 Word, Google Docs, etc)
  • cloud-based file storage and sharing (ex: OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox)
  • video production
  • video editing

Building off of this idea, some projects I have worked on since have included:

Ste Rose School is Happy

This project was completed in 2014 while I was teaching at Ste Rose School in the Turtle River School Division. We piggy-backed on the viral rise of the song, Happy, by Pharell Williams, to create a product that showcased our school. The creation of this video provided an opportunity for our staff/students to discuss:

  • digital footprint and identity
  • social media use

It also gave me a fun opportunity to learn how to code Google to display my personalized information which lead to conversations regarding the validity of online search findings.

MVSD LipDub – We’re All In This Together

This project was completed in March of 2020. At this time, staff and students were at home for a “two-week” school closure as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Our staff were looking for a way to reach out to students, the community, and their colleagues.

At the same time, this shift to remote meant that I needed a way to ensure our staff understood how to:

  • utilize our Office 365 suite to
    • create, use and share collaborative documents
    • upload and share files through OneDrive
  • effectively film video clips for student learning
  • share online projects in a way that is accessible across platforms

To complete this project staff navigated:

  • accessing Office 365 (which was still new to many of our members)
  • collaborating within a Word document to sign up for specific video clips
  • filming their video segments on their device of choice
  • completing basic edits to their video clips
  • uploading and sharing their video files through OneDrive

Our final product is shared below:

MVSD People of Dance

This project was completed in the spring of 2021 and served as a continuation of the skill-development of our 2020 professional development goals.

This project saw staff practice their understanding of collaborative documents and cloud-based storage systems such as OneDrive. Through filming their clips, staff had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the video tools available through their schools laptops, tablet devices, and school-specific resources. Filming and sharing of clips was done through tools such as OneDrive, Seesaw, and Flipgrid to practice the multiple ways in which video evidence can be collected and shared.

Our final product is shared below:
