WOW Wednesday – Jodi Campbell & Yvette Bailes

On Wednesdays I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.

At the start of February I put out a call for staff who were interested in participating in the spring coaching cycle. MVSD schools can sign up to participate in spring coaching cycles to empower students and teachers in their use of educational technology to support programming. Cycles can focus on educator training, student sessions and/or community outreach.

At Roblin Elementary, the Grade 3 cohort reached out regarding support in the area of computational thinking via coding. After consultation we decided to start with the introduction of four of our technology kits:

  • Botley the Coding Robot
  • Code and Go Mouse
  • OSMO: Coding Jam
  • Let’s Go Code

We did two one-hour sessions, across the Gr 3 cohort. These sessions started off with open conversations about student familiarity with coding and discussion on the “language of computers”. Each group then had an opportunity to work with two of the mentioned kits.

Jodi and Yvette will now have the kits until April and they have plans to have each group teach the other about the kits that they learned. This will be followed up with cross-curricular programming.

Way to go!
