WOW Wednesday – Alyssa Watson

On Wednesdays I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.

WOW Wednesday, Alyssa Watson, one-to-one device use and qr code integration for easy platform access in elementary

I would like to shine a light on Alyssa Watson from Ethelbert School. During a recent school visit I had an opportunity to visit her classroom and briefly visit during her lunch break. Her class has access to a class-set of tablets which are individually assigned to students to:

  • increase accessibilty (they stay on student desks unless they are being charged)
  • develop responsibilty (students are in charge of “their” devices, including ensuring that they are properly plugged in and secured overnight)

Alyssa works with elementary students and one strategy she has incorporated has been the use of QR codes affixed to student desks to help guide student access to some of their classroom’s primary digital platforms.* This stategy has helped ensure student access, especially for students who are emerging readers and/or learning how to navigate the device and platforms at the start of the school year.

*Disclaimer: this does not align with my recommendations for responsible password use in classrooms and would not be suitable for secure platforms. This is, however, one strategy to utilize at the elementary level until more appropriate steps can be completed by students. You can read more HERE.
