WOW Wednesday – Kelsey Foote

WOW Wednesday – Kelsey Foote

On Wednesdays I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.

This week I would like to highlight Kelsey Foote out of Gilbert Plains Collegiate Institute (GCPI) who has implemented augmented reality (AR) into his physical education programming. For various reasons, I don’t see as much tech integration into these classes so these opportunities are always very exciting for me! If you are unfamiliar with the community of Gilbert Plains they boast one of Manitoba’s most beautiful golf courses and their town mascot is affectionately known as Gilbert the Golf Ball. As such, it comes as no surprise that the sport of golf plays an important role in the community.

In Manitoba, the high school golf season is very short with practices and tournaments sometimes starting within the first few days of school in September. With the integration of a SkyTrak Swing Bay golf simulator, GPCI is able to offer a way for their students to practice their skills all year long (which is especially valuable in years like this where any potential for spring activities will be hindered by wet conditions). In addition to the extended season, the simulator also allows increased numbers of students to to be introduced to the sport in a manner that is accessible.

I look forward to seeing how GPCI continues to use AR to increase student programming options!
