Today was the first day of school for student’s in our school and it was a busy one! During the first 3 periods of the first day of school, our entire school does a “trial run” of a full day’s schedule so I met all 125-ish of my Cooperating Teacher’s students in about an hour! To say it was a bit overwhelming would be an understatement but it definitely was interesting to see how our school began their first day with students. I also had my schedule change THREE times today… which makes that a total of FIVE… Read More
Whole Brain Teaching Wednesday! Certification Videos & 5 Step Lesson Plans
So today was my second day student teaching. Our day consisted of staff meetings, individual meetings with the principal and prep periods alternating throughout the day. I am going to provide an update tomorrow, as my student teaching schedule has changed DRASTICALLY (in a good way). In the mean time, I have exciting news!! Our principal, “Mrs. R” has told me that I should be able to film my class when I come back to student teach in October! 🙂 Our school has a letter that goes home to all students at the beginning of the year for… Read More
Last "First Day of School"
Today was my last “First Day of School” as a student!! 18 years ago I started my first day of Kindergarten and today I started my first day of my last year of university. From now on, my “first day of school” experiences will be as the teacher as opposed to the student, what an interesting thought! My VERY first day of school: Kindergarten 1995 (I’m on the left, my younger sister is on the right). Don’t you love the work boots and the plaid pants? Although students aren’t back in school until Thursday our student teaching… Read More

Student Teaching at "S-School"
I’m almost done, five years done, ONE to go! In a short two weeks I am going to be starting my second year of my Bachelor of Education degree which will be the LAST year before I am officially graduated and certified as a teacher in Manitoba! In my first year of my Bachelor of Education I took part in two student teaching placements. My first one was five weeks long running from October through November and my second one, at “C-School“, was seven weeks long (eight if you count spring break) running from March through May. In my… Read More
Connected Educator Month
Did you know that August is Connected Educator Month?? To be honest I had not heard of Connected Educator Month until I stumbled across it yesterday on one of my favourite admin blogs, A Principal’s Reflections written by Eric Sheninger. Original Image Credit: https://fishbowlteaching.com/2011/04/21st-century-classroom.html Shared by Eric Sheninger at: https://fishbowlteaching.com/2012/08/connectedness-as-standard.html To celebrate I thought I would share an article I wrote for the Spring 2012 edition of the ManACE Journal. ManACE (the Manitoba Association for Computing Educators) is a Special Area Group of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society as well as a member of the International Society for Technology… Read More
5 Years Down, 1 To Go!
My first year in the Faculty of Education (and 5th year in university) is DONE! After exams in Individuals with Exceptionalities, Classroom Management and Social Studies Methods (all written today) I can officially say I have completed my first year as an education student! My fiance and I celebrated with a congratulatory brunch at Smitties and going to the theater to see Dr. Suess’ The Lorax (the teacher in me couldn’t stop thinking of the inferential thinking scenarios and the social studies curriculum: sustainable development, environmental implications, ecosystems, infrastructure, politics, economy, etc). One more year to go! I have… Read More
My Thoughts on WestCAST
I’m back safe & sound! All 41 of us from our university survived the 11 hour bus ride (22 hours round trip) to and from Calgary without killing each other (almost) haha. All-in-all it was a great time! I really enjoyed spending time with other students from my faculty, some of whom I had not even met before, and I learned a lot from the sessions I attended. I give props to the U of C who organized a wonderful event with some amazing presenters and super helpful volunteers. I was able to visit family, see the mountains and… Read More
Off to WestCAST!
My bronchitis is almost all better, final projects are getting completed and it is time to head off to the annual WestCAST Conference! WestCAST is an annual teacher education conference hosted by various education faculties across Canada’s four western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba). Last year’s conference was actually hosted at my university but I was unfortunately not a part of the faculty yet, darn! This year it is hosted by U of C in Calgary, only a short 10hour bus ride away 🙂 I am really looking forward to this conference because:1 ) There are so… Read More
Help Wanted: Autism Spectrum
I am currently working on a project for my “Students with Exceptionalities” class and am looking for information about teaching students on the autism spectrum. I’ve been able to access some great resources but I would really like to include some quotes from teachers on: 1 ) What are some of the opportunities that teachers face when teaching students on the autism spectrum?2 ) What are some of the challenges that teachers face when teaching students on the autism spectrum?3 ) What do you want other teachers to know about teaching students on the autism spectrum? If any teachers would… Read More
