Resources to Start Off Your Week 43: First Nations Resources Cont.

Last week I posted about five awesome First Nations resources that can be used in our classrooms and I am so excited about the traffic it received! To keep this topic going, I thought that this week I could share an actual project that I completed with my Grade 11 World Issues. As you know, our unit consisted of four sub-topics:– Ethno-diversity– World View– Effects of Assimilation– Indigenous Rights      For our World View topic we looked at a variety of themes including religion, emotions, values, ethics, and relationship with the environment. Since there is only 9 students… Read More

My Evaluation From My Students

Tomorrow we will start our LAST week of our student teaching practicum and I can’t believe how fast it went by. I am so sad to think that I will be leaving my students already but I am happy about how well everything has gone over the past four weeks. I have had two formal evaluations by my supervisor from our university as well as two evaluations by each of my cooperating teachers and they have all gone wonderfully! I am happy to say that I received some great feedback as well as gaining some wonderful references for… Read More

Where in the World is… Whole Brain Teaching?

I know that there will be some of you out there that have been wondering where my Whole Brain Teaching Wednesday posts have gone. Is it because I have been busy with my student teaching practicum? Partially. The main reason, however, is because I have been spending a lot of time reflecting on who I am as a educator and what my personal teaching philosophy is.      In my first semester of my education degree I was asked to create a document that described my personal teaching philosophy. What did I believe the purpose of education was? What… Read More

Canadian History Class

On Friday I shared what was going on in my World Issues class and now it is time to find out what has been happening in Canadian History. I didn’t mean to take so long to make this post but I had many pictures that featured students and I wanted to be sure on our division’s picture release policy before I posted anything. This was the title screen of my PowerPoint I used as part of our learning!      The entire unit that I started has been focusing on “British Colonial Rule” following the fall of New… Read More

What To Do When You Aren't The Right Person For The Job

Yesterday I posted about how things have been progressing in my World Issues class (I will be posting about my Canadian History class on Monday). One thing I did not mention, however, is one of the difficulties I experienced.      As you know, we have been learning about “Indigenous Peoples of The World” and have been comparing and contrasting the First Nations groups of Canada with Indigenous groups in Ethiopia, Kenya and New Zealand. On Friday I presented some information on First Nations people in regards to clothing, food, employment, and homes. I will note that most… Read More

World Issues Class

I can’t believe it is Friday already! Student teaching has been ALL consuming and I am trying so hard to make a good impression and provide meaningful learning opportunities for my students. I want to share all of the things I have been doing with my two main classes so I am dividing this into two separate posts…      First, World Issues! My Grade 11 World Issues class only has 9 students so I really wanted to try my hand at working in options that were inquiry-based that allowed the students to have more control of their… Read More

And it Begins… with Canadian History

Yesterday I had my first day of actual teaching in the Grade 11 Canadian History class. The start of the class was a little hectic as we got called down for picture day as soon as class began. I tried to roll with it, however, and had students fill out short questionnaires on que-cards as they came back. I asked them to include their:– Name– Favourite Subject– Least Favourite Subject– One thing I love about history is…– One thing I hate about history is…      I explained that this would help me learn more about them so… Read More

Student Teaching: My Classrooms

As of Monday my fiance and I are both back student teaching at “S-School” full time for the next five weeks. Although I haven’t officially begun teaching yet as my cooperating teachers are finishing up their units  and having their final tests before I take over using my lesson plans and resources. If you remember, my schedule looks like this:      Here is what my classrooms look like! (In order of how they appear on my schedule).  Grade 11/12 World Issues: I will be starting my unit on Indigenous Peoples on Monday. Grade 9/10 ICT: I will be… Read More

Remind 101

As you may know, I started student teaching again this week but have only been observing my cooperating teachers so far (I start teaching Canadian History tomorrow). In these few short days I have heard the following: “I forgot that at work.“ “I was so busy last night by the time I got home I forgot.“ “I can’t remember that!“  “That was due?!“ “Oh right, we’re doing that today…. I don’t have it.“      I get it, our students are very busy and most of them have afterschool jobs, work one (or more jobs), care for younger… Read More

Whole Brain Teaching Wednesday! Student Teaching Thoughts

Student teaching is just a short 11 days away and I busily attempting to get everything together for the six units that I will be teaching to my Grade 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12 classes! Here is a reminder of what my schedule will look like:      I mentioned before that I am going to, hopefully, be filming a video to submit for my WBT Certification while I am student teaching and I already have so many things to consider. – What class should I be filming? – Since I will also be using the video for… Read More
