"Honest Trailers" Classroom Edition

Screen Junkies. (2008). “YouTube Channel Heading”. Screenshot. Available online at: http://www.youtube.com/user/screenjunkies      Have you ever heard of “Honest Trailers”? I hadn’t heard of them until today but I am very excited about the role that they could play in the classroom. “Honest Trailers” are put out on YouTube by ScreenJunkies and provide humorous, straight-forward analysis of recent movies by revamping their movie trailers. Here is how they describe their channel:         Where guys go to get honest and authoritative advice on what movies     and TV shows they should watch and which ones aren’t worth the time.   … Read More

Resources To Start Off Your Week 58

Happy Spring Break everyone, as of Friday the 22nd we have officially been on holidays and won’t be back in the classroom until April 1st. The weather is almost feeling like spring time (it is around -10 C) but we still have well over two feet of snow that can begin melting anytime (seriously… anytime now). We don’t have a lot of plans for the holidays as we are calving on our farm so I’ve ended up having lots of time to prep for school and spend time with our new puppy, Kevin! I’ve been spending some extra… Read More

Resources To Start Off Your Week 57

Today I am writing this post from school because there are almost no students here due to a bad snow storm. I only had three students in my class this morning and two of them left to meet with another teacher to complete work that they owed her before report cards come out. As such, it has been a very long lonely day at “S-School” today. The good thing, however, is that there is a lot of prep time to make sure I am more prepared once spring break is over. Some of my prep time was used… Read More

Resources To Start Off Your Week 54

Happy Louis Riel Day! In Manitoba we are celebrating a long weekend and I am really enjoying the extra time to work on homework and spend time with family. Coincidentally it is also storming a lot so I’m think that I would be at home even if it wasn’t a holiday! This past week has been a busy one for resources as I summarized over twenty resources for my post on Infographics and Videos in the Classroom. As I do with all of these resources, I will be adding them to my lists of resources under the Fav Websites heading.… Read More

Resources To Start Off Your Week 53

This week I have two great YouTube Channels that I just found as well as a LiveBinders compilation about QR Codes in the classroom! As always, I will be adding these to my lists of resources under the Fav Websites heading. 1 ) VSauce YouTube Channel– This YouTube Channel features some great videos that could be used as   activating strategies in the classroom such as “Is the 5 Second Rule True?”   and “What if Everyone Jumped At Once?”. These videos are very   engaging and I can see students getting really excited by the off-beat and   interesting information.– These… Read More

Infographics in the Classroom

I’m going to start this post by admitting that I absolutely love infographics! I find them more engaging than paragraphs of text and I love seeing the information visually displayed in an aesthetic manner, which is interesting because I don’t consider myself a visual learner. If you aren’t familiar with infographics here is an explanatory image: Image Credit: Infographics. (2013). CC-BY-SA. http://infographicsineducation.wikispaces.com/      I believe that, likes memes and trending YouTube videos, infographics can be a great way of presenting information through a platform that students are familiar with. One only needs to type in the word, “Infographic” into Google… Read More

Resources To Start Off Your Week 52

This week I was inspired by some of the speakers I heard during my Internet for Educators class and #etmooc conversations. There are so many amazing resources available online but it is important to be teaching our students to “Not Steal From the Internet” and to use information appropriately. These resources can help teachers and students to use resources appropriately within the framework of schools and providing proper attribution when applicable. As always, I will be adding these to my lists of resources under the Fav Websites heading. 1 ) Terms of Service; Didn’t Read– Are you like… Read More
