WOW Wednesday – MMS eSports Champions
On Wednesdays I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.
This is an especially exciting WOW Wednesday post to share as we announce that the MMS Blue Magic eSports team are AAA Champions!! You may recall that MMS had a WOW Wednesday highlight in May of 2022 when their team began the planning process on how to integrate eSports into their programming during the 22/23 school year. Fast forward and, in their first year of play, they are now AAA Champions!
Within MMS, eSports operates using Nintendo Switch consoles and has two different tiers:
- league play within the Manitoba School eSports Association (MSEA)
- tryouts occur for each season
- coaching and supervision lead by MMS staff and community volunteers
- intramural play during student breaks
- students sign-up as part of the school intramural schedule
- supervision lead by MMS staff
I am so proud of the growth this group has displayed over the past 4 years that I have been within MVSD. Although this is the first time we participated in the MSEA league, eSports for this cohort began with Minecraft out of Ecole Macneill back in 2019. As students left elementary and joined Mackenzie Middle School, they advocated for the integration of eSports at this level and, starting in the fall we will have the first members of this cohort starting high school! I strongly believe that we are at the cusp of a shift as this group brings eSports to the DRCSS; which will be so exciting!
