WOW Wednesday – Podcasting in the Classroom
On Wednesdays I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.
In MVSD we have three podcasting kits that are available for loan to any staff member or student. They include a Snowball USB Microphone, high quality headphones, and supplementary resources to support classroom use. One example of these kits in action comes from Megan out of Ethelbert School who used the podcasting kits with her Grade 11 and 12 students as an option for them to showcase their understanding of course material. Not only does it allow students to share their knowledge with their teacher, but it provides an easily accessible digital artifact that can be shared or used as supplementary material with future students. The feedback I received from Megan, in the photo above, was resoundingly positive and it is my hope that this type of classroom review helps pave the way for other teachers to try out this kit in their room; thank you!
Podcasting can be a powerful educational tool for teachers and students alike. It has the potential to revolutionize classroom instruction by providing an engaging and interactive way for students to engage with the material. Podcasting can help to improve student motivation and comprehension, as well as provide opportunities for students to practice their critical thinking and communication skills through the creation of their own podcasts. With podcasting, students can listen to and discuss a wide range of topics, from current events to historical perspectives. In addition, teachers can use podcasts to provide supplemental material that can help to enhance their own teaching and give students a deeper understanding of the material.
When used in the classroom, podcasts can be used to supplement the lesson plan and provide students with an opportunity to share their understanding in a way that does not require them to present in front of an audience or create written content. They can also be used to provide students with audio versions of the material, allowing them to listen to material while they are away from the classroom or unable to attend class; an option that requires less connectivity infrastructure compared to videos and other digital materials. Podcasts can also be used to create a collaborative learning environment where students can share their own thoughts and perspectives on the material.
Overall, podcasting can be a great tool for teachers and students alike. It can provide an engaging and interactive way for students to engage with the material, as well as develop their critical thinking and communication skills. With a wide range of topics available, podcasts can be used to supplement the lesson plan and provide students with an opportunity to explore different topics and ideas.
