WOW Wednesday – Bryce Shewchuk

WOW Wednesday – Bryce Shewchuk

On Wednesdays I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.

This week an EA at Grandview School reached out to me as they wanted to share some of the tech integration they saw happening at their building. I was thankfully able to connect with the teacher in question to learn more and I am so excited to be able to feature Bryce Shewchuk for this week’s WOW Wednesday post!

Bryce teaches both Grade 6 & 8 classes at Grandview School and has been automating aspects of their formative assessment practices through the integration of the Plickers system and Plagnets. While I was familiar with Plickers from when I taught at Ste Rose, Plagnets was new to me so the integration of these two approaches was fun to learn about from Bryce. I will share videos about the two of these below for your review:

As you may know, I am a big fan of when staff can automate certain elements of their programming as this will free up extra time for them to have more face-to-face time with their students. With a quick scan, Bryce has access to the data they need without the time needed to individually grade each student response.

This type of tech integration is also a perfect example of how you can build in the use of digital tools without having each student on a device. In this case, the educator is the only one with a device which makes this very accessible for our classrooms that rely on sharing devices with other rooms.

Bryce shared that they have used this setup for:

  • attendance
  • daily check-ins
  • transition activities (returning from recess or changing subjects)
  • daily language for ELA
  • subject-specific vocabulary for Science and Social Studies
  • various other formative assessments

I think this is so cool and want to give a BIG shout-out to Bryce for modelling this type of practice for their students and colleagues within MVSD; way to go!
