#TechTipTuesday – Break the Fake

Every Tuesday I share a Tech Tip on our social media pages to assist our staff in their use of technology as it relates to their role. As October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, all of the tips shared this month will tackle common cyber security concerns (both student-related and work-place related).

If you missed our previous cyber security tips you can check them out below:

With that being said, today is not only part of Cyber Security Awareness month but also Media Literacy Week! As such, today’s tip blends both of these topics as we address “fake news” and the authenticity and reliability of information we find online.

These areas heavily overlap as our media and digital literacy skills help us immensely in staying safe online. I strongly believe that by strengthening our ability to identify accurate information online you reduce your chance of clicking into malicious links that could lead to you receiving phishing emails and/or your account being compromised (see previous Cyber Security posts mentioned above for more info).

Media Smarts has put together a great compilation of resources that can be used by educators and their students as they work to authenticate online information. There are informational articles, lesson plans, videos, interactives, and much more!

Check out everything that Break the Fake has to offer as well as some of my other favourite Media Literacy Week resources.
