Originating in the UK, Safer Internet Day is now celebrating it’s 19th year in countries around the world. The following description is provided direct from their website:

With a slogan of “Together for a better internet”, Safer Internet Day is a call to action for every stakeholder to contribute to a safer and better internet, especially for its youngest users. The past year has shown us first-hand the importance of ensuring that the largest possible number of children and young people are adequately prepared to handle digital technologies responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. Only then can they experience the digital world as a place of knowledge, culture and opportunities.

As part of the Safer Internet Day events, the organization put together social media templates (see above) to help participants reflect on, “how we can all work together to create a better internet by challenging ourselves, those around us, and the apps we interact with online.” I chose to include the following statements in my pledge:

  • Positive Vibes Only
  • Report, Block, Get Support
  • Avoid Ecochambers
  • Respect Copyright

The Safer Internet Day website is a trove of resources for schools, families and communities and features:

  • digital safety quizzes to guide student (and adult) self-reflection
  • remote learning safety considerations
  • family support guides
  • digital learning paths for students
  • an much more!
