WOW Wednesday – Winnipegosis Collegiate
Every Wednesday I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.
This week I had an opportunity to visit Winnipegosis Collegiate, in person, to work with their Grade 10-12 students in their ELA class. At the request of their teacher, our topics included intellectual property and copyright.
- what is it?
- what does it look like across different mediums?
- why is it important?
- what role does it play in the classroom?
Our discussions also built off of the social media and digital footprint session we did in the fall as part of Media Literacy Week. To begin our session we compared the two videos below:
We chatted about:
- What is sampling?
- What similarities exist between these two situations?
- Why are the songs in the first video being celebrated while the second involves a law suit?
We then worked through components of the “Remixing Media” kit from MediaSmarts and reviewed how to find and use information online via the “Getting the Goods Ethically” tip sheet.
As we worked through this material and chatted as a large group we also:
- Did a deeper dive into what intellectual property can look like
- Reviewed how to use tools such as Creative Commons to find appropriate resources
- Looked at how tools that are built into our Office 365 suite can assist them in their appropriate use of other people’s works, including reference formatting and in-program Bing image searches
Students were left with a familiarity of these concepts as well as practical strategies to include these tools into their end-of-the-year ELA projects. Thank you to W.C.I for hosting me in your building, I look forward to seeing your students strengthen these skills!
