WOW Wednesday – Chelsea Hockridge

WOW Wednesday – Chelsea Hockridge

Every Wednesday I highlight some of our amazing MVSD staff on our social media pages. Everyday our staff are using tech in new and exciting ways, are learning new skills, and are sharing ways in which ed tech is assisting them in their practice.

Chelsea has served as a mentor to me for many many years; I will not date either of us but she was someone who I looked to for advice while I was completing my B.Ed. Since that time Chelsea and I had the opportunity to complete our M.Ed together as part of the MVSD-Cohort and, given our shared passion for tech, we were able to work together on several projects (one example can be viewed here).

Chelsea is a true model of a life-long learner and has been identified as a natural leader in her building and across the division; where she sits as our PD Chair. Early in 2020 Chelsea was the first MVSD staff member to utilize the included Minecraft EDU licenses included as part of our Office 365 partnership -agreement with MERLIN. Since that time she has utilized the program with students in multiple situations, including:

  • a school-wide Minecraft extra-curricular club
  • cohort-specific Minecraft exploration which saw Gr 6 students participate in the January Build Challenge
    • tied into their science unit on Space
  • cross-curricular exploration of Manitoba and the relationship between culture and food via the Manito Ahbee Aki world in her home-ec class

Chelsea’s influence extends beyond her school. Her willingness to share about her experiences as part of our summer Social Media Takeover (also embedded below) has directly resulted in staff at Smith Jackson, Henderson, and Gilbert Plains Elementary reaching out to try Minecraft in their classrooms. To hear more about how Chelsea uses Minecraft at Mackenzie Middle School, and her views on gamification in education, check out her recent appearance on the Dial IT Up podcast (embedded below).
