Media Literacy Week 2020

Media Literacy Week 2020

Every Monday I share a different ed tech quote on our Thompson Classroom social media pages for our staff to consider.  In honour of Media Literacy week, which runs from October 26-30, this week’s Mantra is:

51% of surveyed Canadian students, Gr 4-12, indicated they wish their teachers taught them more about, "how to tell if online information is true", Media Literacy Week
Ed Tech Quote. (2014). Uploaded by Kirsten Thompson. Available online at: https://mediasmarts.ca/sites/default/files/pdfs/publication-report/full/YCWWIII_Experts_or_Amateurs.pdf

If you are new to Media Literacy Week, Media Smarts describes it as:

Media Literacy Week (MLW) is an annual event promoting digital and media literacy across Canada. Schools, libraries, museums and community groups organize events and activities throughout the week.

In 2020, we’re encouraging Canadians of all ages to be good digital citizens by checking the info they see online before sharing it. Take part by becoming a Collaboratorplanning digital and media literacy activities for your classroom, and by spreading the word on social media using #MediaLitWk!

My Media Literacy Week Plans

I was able to kick off Media Literacy week with a guest discussion with the Global Issues Class at Winnipegosis Collegiate. They are currently working on a social media campaign to bring awareness to the effect climate change is having on Manitoba’s polar bear population. We chatted about how to use various social media platforms for advocacy, how to utilize hashtags effectively, and the importance of your digital footprint.

I am also involved in a few different educational campaigns as well as a public speaking event, which I will be sharing more about tomorrow.

What are your Media Literacy Week plans?
