This week I wanted to share one of my “go-to” organizations when it comes to finding current, Canadian research on media use for youth and educators: Media Smarts. They also have a fantastic trove of FREE resources for parents and educators to help facilitate safe and informed use of various media forms.

In their own words, Media Smarts, “has been developing digital and media literacy programs and resources for Canadian homes, schools and communities since 1996. Through our work we support adults with information and tools so they can help children and teens develop the critical thinking skills they need to interacting with the media they love. Our work falls into three main areas: education, public awareness, and research and policy.“
As I was working on the completion of my M.Ed I found that I was continually running into the same problems when it came to finding ed tech information that was relevant to me:
– with tech changing so quickly, papers become outdated incredibly fast
– most papers are focused on US data or data from various communities in Asia
Media Smarts was such a refreshing find as they are Canadian based and have new research at least every year (if not every few months). Their research continues to be a point of discussion for our team and I also pull many of their FREE resources during my parent ed-tech nights or school visits.
Have you checked out Media Smarts before? If so, I’d love to hear how you use their resources. Leave me a comment below.
